Immanuel Kant's philosophy

Immanuel Kant was a German Enlightenment philosopher who focused epistemology, ethics, and aesthetics.

Biology

Immanuel Kant was born in Konigsberg, Prussia on April 22, 1724 and died on February 12, 1804. His father was a master harness maker and his mother was well educated, for a woman in the middle class. Immanuel went to the collegium Fridericianum, a Pietist school (Lutheran conversion movement), from the age on eight to fifteen. He didn't like most of the classes and used the latin classes as refuge. He was highly influenced by his parents artesian side not so much as their religious side. He learned through example "hard work, honesty, cleanliness, and independence." He attended the College of Konigsberg, or Albernia. During collage he took philosophy which included logic, metaphysics, physics, mathematics, ethics, and natural law. His favorite teacher was a Pietist named Martin Knutzen, who was heavily influenced by the works of Wolff and John Locke. Martin also showed Immanuel the works of Isaac Newton. Newton's influence was evident in Immanuel's first published works in 1747, True Estimation of Living Forces. After college Immanuel worked as a private tutor for kids outside of Konigsberg. In 1754 he returned to Konigsberg and started teaching philosophy at his old college but to secure his job he wrote two latin dissertations; Concise Outline of Some Reflections on Fire (1755), and New Elucidation of the First Principles of Metaphysical Cognition (1755). He did not have a salary and worked as a lecturer and attempted to be promoted to associate professor of logic and metaphysics by publishing The Employment in Natural Philosophy of Metaphysics Combined with Geometry, of Which Sample I Contains the Physical Monadology (1756). He lectured from 1755-1770 and worked about 20 hours a week just to make a living. In 1762 to 1764 he wrote five more works, The False Subtlety of the Four Syllogistic Figures (1762) and The Only Possible Argument in Support of a Demonstration of the Existence of God (1762-3) to name two. In 1770 Kant was elected chair of in logic and metaphysics at Albertina. For the following years he wrote many books and came up with many ideas until his retirement in 1796 where he still worked on publishing another book but died before publishing it. In his notes there was an obvious decline in his mental health but it was not found until after his death on February 12, 1804 only a little before his eightieth birthday.[1]

School of Thought

Kant was part of the rationalist school of thought. They believed reason was the only reliable source of knowledge. The problem though is how much can you trust your senses?
